It is a hygroscopic substance and it resolves into sodium oxalate and hydrogen and by sodium carbonate. Sodium formate is soluble in 1.3 water and glycerol and slightly soluble in ethanol and the aqueous solution appears neutral with pH value at 7. It is irritant and melted at 253℃.

For other application, Sodium formate is the raw material for the production of hydrosulfite, Oxalic acid and formic acid, and is a precipitant for heavy metals including some complex irons formed by trivalent metals so it is used to test these heavy metals such as phosphorus and arsenic, etc.
