Glycerol triacetate (Triacetin, CAS 102-76-1) is an organic compound with the Molecular formula of C9H14O6. It is a colorless and odorless oily liquid, miscible with ethanol, ether, chloroform and benzene, slightly soluble in water and Carbon disulfide.
Property description
Colorless oily liquid. Melting point 3 ℃, boiling point 258-259 ℃, 130.5 ℃ (0.39kPa), relative density 1.1596 (20/4 ℃), refractive index 1.4301, flash point 148.8 ℃. Can be mixed with ethanol; Ether; Chloroform and benzene are miscible, slightly soluble in water and Carbon disulfide, and the solubility in water at 25 ℃ is 5.9g/100ml, which is bitter.
Production method
Obtained by esterification of glycerol with acetic acid. Preheat glycerol to 50-60 ℃ and add acetic acid; Benzene and sulfuric acid. Heat, stir, reflux, and dehydrate. After dehydration, recover benzene, then add acetic anhydride and heat for 4 hours. After cooling, neutralize the pH to 7 with 5% sodium carbonate, separate the water layer, and dry the crude oil with calcium chloride. Distillation under reduced pressure, collect the fraction at 128-131 ℃ (0.93kPa), which is glycerol triacetate.
