Povidone iodine (PVP-Iodine, cas 25655-41-8, USP26 USP39) is a loose compound formed by the combination of elemental iodine and polymer carrier. Povidone plays a role of carrier and solubilization. It is yellow brown to brownish red amorphous powder at room temperature. Slightly odorous, easily soluble in water or ethanol, acidic aqueous solution, insoluble in ether, chloroform, acetone, ethane and carbon tetrachloride. Povidone iodine aqueous solution has no iodine tincture defects. It is light in color, easy to wash off, has little irritation to mucous membrane, does not require ethanol deiodination, has no corrosive effect, and has low toxicity.

Function and use

It is a broad-spectrum powerful disinfectant and has a strong killing effect on viruses, bacteria, fungi and mold spores. This product has little skin irritation, low toxicity and lasting effect. It is safe and convenient to use. It is basically non irritating to tissues, and is used for skin and mucous membrane disinfection, such as cleaning before surgery, surgical site and wound disinfection.

Povidone iodine, usually made into 10% solution, is used as disinfectant. Effective killing: Newcastle disease, bursal disease, avian influenza, mycoplasma, Escherichia coli, salmonella, influenza, blue ear disease, etc. It can also kill the parasites and eggs of livestock and poultry, and inhibit the breeding of mosquitoes and flies.
